Spring has sprung over Denver, and things are hopping here in the BHDC workshop. This season is usually the busiest for construction, as folks take advantage of building during warm weather. We're gearing up for a whole slew of awesome projects and looking forward to building some cool stuff all over Denver. As of last count, we have around 25 active projects right now. Hot damn, we are bussssssy and having a helluva lotta fun! Check out our column Around Town, which highlights some cool new restaurants and establishments that are coming soon to the Denver area. Also, keep an eye out for our Tips and Tools; we'll give y'all a peek behind the curtain at some new techniques and ideas for custom furniture and interiors. Happy Trails, friends!

Tips & Tools: Distressed Paint Finish Looking for that rustic, whitewash look in your custom furniture? Consider a chalk paint combo. First, choose a base color; we recommend a rich brown or slate gray, and paint your entire piece. Once dry, paint with white chalk paint. Then, sand away the top layer strategically and thoughtfully in order to craft an authentic, distressed finish. As you paint and sand, think about the story of the piece. For example, if you're painting a dining table, maybe distress it more where the place settings go. If it's a dresser, think about all the dings and scratches that would naturally occur over time. In short, tell a story through the finish.

Around Town

Vital Root on Tennyson. Justin Cucci, master of innovative restaurants in Denver, is opening a new spot on Tennyson, catering to vegetarian foodies. Cucci's portfolio includes transforming a former mortuary (Linger), a gas station (Root Down) and an old brothel (Ophelia’s), so we're pretty stoked to check out Vital Root. Black Hound is creating a 20 foot tall steel tree sculpture, a handful of gnarly outdoor tables, and much more. Stay tuned for photos!

Syrup on City Park. A new breakfast hotspot is coming to City Park. Syrup, by Tim Doherty. With three locations, Syrup is known for a contemporary take on the classic pancake house. You gotta try their crack bacon and pancake flight! Oh man! Black Hound built the community tables, booths, bar and glass and brass shelving. They just opened this week, so check em out!

Happy Leaf in Edgewater.

As residents of the Sloans Lake area, we can't wait to grab some tasty beverages at Happy Leaf, Denver's first kombucha brewery and taproom. Kombucha, a fermented tea known for its health benefits, is supposed to help the immune system and contains a lot of vitamin B for extra energy. The Black Hound boys will surely be grabbing a few before long work days! We built their tables, accent wall, and "Black Hounded" their hostess station and bar.
