OUR STORY

James Hixson grew up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in southeast Ohio. Even at a young age, James was always building and tearing things apart; so, he majored in Sculpture at Ohio University. While attending college, James spent each summer in Cape Cod, building sets for a local theatre company. This fast-paced work gave James the ability to design and build highly creative custom products, under tight deadlines and even tighter budgets. 

 

After graduating college, James spent a few years as a high school Art teacher. However, James realized that he wanted to pursue design and woodworking full-time. So, after recently transplanting to Denver, Colorado, James started his business, Black Hound Design Company.

 

James is now joined by a whole slew of 15 awesome team members. Brody, Cliff, Will, Brian, Josh and Charlie are but a few of the talented fellas on the Black Hound team. 

 

Bottom line, they're just a bunch of guys who like to build cool stuff. 

 

Black Hound Design Company specializes in custom furniture, woodworking and fabrication for Colorado and across the country. They design each piece carefully, building unique and creative solutions for your business or home.  

 

The company is named after Murphy, an old hound dog that James and Kate adopted many years back. If he's not out on a hike in the Rocky Mountains, Murphy loves to hang out in the workshop, dozing off in piles of blankets and sawdust.
